Alright....well..how do I explain how I got this idea??? Basically, my friend and I were haging out at the fire during my uncle's medieval campout at his house, and we met a drunk guy named Ichabod. As we were talking to him, my friend noticed that one of the logs buring in the fire looked like a pointing finger, and I looked and I agreed, and Ichabod was too drunk to see half the things in front of him so we spent a long time explaining it. Wespent so long explaining it that all sorts of images started popping into my head and I started sketching. When we got back home, I started a new page and freehanded the picture in ink, and somehow it turned into this. So..yea this picture is based off of a log we saw.
As for the explaination for the symbolism, the tree is the tree used to hang people from, and was chosen because it looks as if it itself is evil: the roots form the shape of a screaming person, and the trunk comes out of the person in the shape of a hand, as if Satan is coming out of the person and pointing towards the sky. This could be taken as if by lynching the person, they are
1) redeemed
2) taken down to hell and the finger is pointing as if to say "you could have gone there"
You're choice for how to interpret that, my mind thinks up some crazy ideas sometimes...
