Hertemes (Hare-te-me) literally means "Deer People" in the language of the Laelien people who co-exist with them. The Herteme are a quiet, timid creatures who are rarely seen, but often their fresh tracks can be found early in the morning. The Herteme are revered by the people as spirits of the woods. The Herteme have watched te Laelien for a long time, and have begun to pick up on what they see, such as using things found in the woods to imitate the jewelry the Laelien have been seen to wear. Only twice in hundreds of years has the soft voice of a Herteme been heard by human ears...
Naturally, only the males have antlers, and the fawns loose their spots as they grow older. They resemble their muntjac brothers because of the stark contrast of their hair atop their heads compared to the rest of their body, but are more closely related to the red deer.
