Finally, the return of the green goddess (yeah, she's green, for those of you who aren't familiar), and one of my favorite little-known characters! Before I go on to talk about the art itself, I'll take a moment to explain the Zool series of games, for those who don't know and are curious.
I don't know how many of you will actually remember the game Zool - it did eventually come out on the Super Nintendo and Megadrive/Genesis, although I'm not sure in which territories. Before that though, it was a platform game for the Commodore Amiga/Atari ST, and various other 16/32 bit home computers (as opposed to consoles). It was obviously intended as a reaction to the popularity of the Sonic franchise, and attempted to present Zool (the main character) as a flagship character for non-console owners. Clearly it didn't compete with Sonic in any real sense, on account of it just not being as good a game, but it was still popular for a while, enough so that a sequel, Zool 2, was made. This one was only for the computers, and never appeared on games consoles, except for the Atari Jaguar. As well as Zool, you could now play as his female companion, Zooz. So now you know where the character comes from... I'll give you a link if you want to see more about the game: http://www.mobygames.com/game/zool-2
Now, on to the art itself... This isn't Zooz exactly as she appears in the game, or any of the official art - the head is pretty much the same, but I've given her a more realistic figure, because I think she looks better that way. I actually wanted to give her a look kind of like Elexis Sinclair, from the PC game 'Sin' - so that's where I borrowed the pose from. And, of course, the heels. And that's a lightning whip of some variety she's holding - it's what she uses in the game.
This picture lead to some frustration for me, as it was all going really well and then I realised that I needed about an inch more paper at the bottom to draw her spiky heels. So, I had to use another bit of paper, placed underneath the first piece, in order to finish it properly. So I don't have a proper copy of this here, but I managed to join the two pieces fairly successfully using digital means.
Overall, I'm really happy with this - it's definitely the best Zooz I've done so far. Let me know what you think. Also, let me know if you remember the character! |
