I am So glad this is finally finished! You'd think the Powerpuff Girls would be easier to draw than some of the things I've done in the past, but that wasn't the case for me. To begin with, I had problems with the shape of their heads - it's difficult to get that ellipsoid shape right when you're not painting on a computer (all 3 were hand drawn, but I'll explain more later). I ended up resorting to some basic sine/cosine maths and a ruler to help me plot some guidance points to make the head shape, after measuring its dimensions from official pictures.
Anyway, the first girl I drew was Blossom. I was quite happy with my work at this point. Obviously the next step was to draw Bubbles and Buttercup, but before I did that, I made a vague sort of stencil thing from Blossom (well, it was more like tracing) that consisted of head/body outlines, so that I could then draw the other two with a degree of uniformity.
So with all 3 girls drawn, it should have been a matter of simply scanning them all, and then arranging them digitally into the same picture (this was my intention from the beginning). However, I decided at this point that I needed to redraw Blossom - because I'd drawn her first, and not from the template, she looked a lot more sketchy, and although I still liked it, I opted to redraw her so that the overall picture would look even. The new one (the one in the picture) has a better shape, don't know if I shaded it as well as the original Blossom, but never mind.
I couldn't decide how to present the full picture - I have a version in which each girl has been tinted in their respective colors. Perhaps I will upload this at a later date. Also originally I had them in the same line, instead of with Blossom in front, overlapping the other two. I suppose if anyone wants to see the other versions, or even the individual girl's pictures, they could suggest it to me. The shadows, by the way, were a last minute addition. One of the reasons I went with the grey version of the image as opposed to the color one is that the shadows look better in this one.
So, I've written all that and I've not even mentioned what I think of the PPG's and why I drew this. It's a cartoon I like a lot, the humour is great, and I just thought they'd look good in my gallery.
I think Buttercup came out the best, what do you think? Comments very welcome! |
